May 11, 2023 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Four University of North Carolina women's lacrosse players have garnered All-South Region honors by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association, which was announced Thursday afternoon ahead of the NCAA Tournament.Â
Landing on the IWLCA All-South Region First Team is Alyssa Long, Emily Nalls and Brooklyn Walker-Welch while Caroline Godine found herself on the second team. Â
Godine, the lone freshman on a south region team, is also one of only four rookies receiving recognition out of the 128 student-athletes honored across four regions.Â
Having a breakout junior season is Long, a midfielder who has amassed 16 goals, seven assists, 23 points, nine ground balls and 31 draw controls – all of which are career highs. She was named Second Team All-ACC and Honorable Mention All-America by USA Lacrosse Magazine, the first such honors of her career.Â
Anchoring the Tar Heels' defensive unit that has limited opponents to a league-leading 8.61 goals per game – which also ranks eighth nationally – are Nalls and Walker-Welch. Nalls leads the roster with 27 caused turnovers followed by Walker-Welch with 13 in third, while the duo has collected 28 and 23 ground balls, respectively.Â
Both defenders were tabbed First Team All-ACC and to the ACC All-Tournament Team in addition to being named Third Team All-America. Nalls was also a top-25 honoree for the prestigious Tewaaraton Award.
Godine, who ranks third on the team in both assists (22) and points (50) as well as fourth in goals (28), led all players in the ACC Tournament with nine goals and 11 points. She collected ACC All-Freshman, ACC All-Tournament and Honorable Mention All-America accolades.Â
The Tar Heels return to action Friday, May 12, at 2 p.m. ET to host Sacred Heart at Dorrance Field in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. No. 4-seed UNC is making its 18th straight, and 24th overall, NCAA Tournament appearance.Â
