May 18, 2023 | Men's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina men's soccer team is set to embark on an 11-day international trip to Slovakia and the Czech Republic, beginning Thursday, May 18. The team will take part in three matches while overseas.
Fans can follow along with the team throughout their trip via Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. The Tar Heels will also have a daily travel blog, available here.
"I'm most excited about being able to grow and connect further as a team while having the opportunity to learn about many different cultures that we may not directly experience in the United States," said defender Riley Thomas, a rising senior. "Everyone is ready to fully appreciate the opportunity this amazing trip brings, and use our soccer and team personality to bring recognition to UNC men's soccer globally."
The Tar Heels will take on Slovan Bratislava, a member of the Slovak Super Liga and one of the country's most successful clubs, on May 22. Carolina will also go to the Super Liga playoff match between Slovan Bratislava and Zeleziarne Podbrezova.
The team will spend an afternoon in nearby Vienna, Austria, where they will visit one of the world's largest palaces in The Hofburg. They will explore Mariahilfer Strasse, the largest shopping street in Austria's capital city, in addition to going to an Austrian Bundesliga playoff game between Rapid Wien and LASK.
Upon making their way to the Czech Republic, the Tar Heels will have their second match against FC Slovacko on May 25 before playing Slovan Liberec on May 28. Both teams are members of the Czech First League.
Excursions on the itinerary during Carolina's stay in the Czech Republic include visiting the Strahov Monastery, Prague Castle, Charles Bridge and Old Town. The team will also attend the Czech First League championship round match between Sparta Prague and Viktoria Plzen.
North Carolina will train at NSK Bratislava, as well as other locations, throughout the trip.
