May 2, 2023 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – UNC junior third baseman Mac Horvath was named the NCBWA Dick Howser Trophy National Hitter of the Week presented by The Game Headwear after an eye-popping performance last week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.
A native of Rochester, Minn., Horvath led North Carolina to a 3-1 week that culminated with a doubleheader sweep of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on Saturday. He batted .563 (9-for-16) with a 2.181 OPS, belting five home runs and driving home an astounding 19 runs.
Horvath smashed two three-run homers and added a two-run single to start the week with eight RBIs in the Tar Heels' 18-2 win over UNCW. Two games later, he collected seven RBIs with a grand slam and another three-run drive in game one of the twin bill. He went 5-for-8 in the two games with 11 RBIs.
Horvath hit his 42nd career home run in the nightcap, moving into a tie for third place on the school's all-time list. It was also his 19th of the season, setting a new career-high.
Previously, Horvath was named the ACC, D1 Baseball, and Rawling's/Perfect Game Player of the Week.
The Tar Heels are at home tonight, Tuesday, May 2, against No. 13 Campbell at 6 p.m.
