Baseball Rally Comes Up One Run Short Against Iowa

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Jack Whitlock tossed three scoreless innings, Kyle Huckstorf scored the game-winning run on a squeeze bunt in the eighth inning, and No. 2 seed Iowa defeated No. 3 seed North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA Terre Haute Regional on Friday.
The Tar Heels will face No. 4 seed Wright State in an elimination game Saturday at noon. Iowa will take on No. 1 seed Indiana State at 6 p.m.
Iowa led 3-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth and got two key insurance runs to extend its lead to four runs. Michael Seegers drew a lead-off walk to start the frame, and Huckstorf singled through the right side, pushing him to third. Brayden Frazier followed with an RBI single, and Huckstorf advanced to third.
Caden Moss then squeezed home Huckstorf with the game-winning run.
Huckstorf and Frazier collected two hits each and scored a run as part of the Hawkeyes' nine-hit game.
Alberto Osuna hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning, and Jackson Van De Brake laced a one-out RBI double to right field to make it a one-run game and put the tying run at third base.
Luke Llewellyn, who was brought in to face Van De Brake, struck out the final two batters for his fourth save of the season.
Patrick Alvarez collected two hits for the Tar Heels.
Marcus Moore (5-2) earned the victory allowing one run and two hits in 5.0 innings with four walks and five strikeouts. Jake Knapp (5-4) took the loss in 2.1 innings pitched, yielding two runs in the first and another in the second.
