Carlson And Frick Selected On Day Three Of MLB Draft

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Two UNC battery mates were selected Tuesday on day three of the 2023 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.
Pitcher Max Carlson was taken in the 12th round by the Boston Red Sox, while the New York Yankees drafted catcher Tomas Frick in the 15th round.
The teammates were the second and third players from UNC drafted this year. Mac Horvath was the Baltimore Orioles' second-round pick.
Carlson finished his junior season with a 5-2 record and a 5.45 ERA. He averaged a strikeout per inning and nine strikeouts per nine innings, fanning 76 batters in 76 innings pitched. He made 14 starts and three relief appearances and posted a 2.375 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
In his final outing of the season, Carlson teamed with Dalton Pence for a shutout in the NCAA Terre Haute Regional, pitching 6.2 scoreless innings with five strikeouts allowing one hit versus Wright State.
He recorded five quality starts and tossed seven or more innings four times.
Carlson is the ninth Tar Heel to be drafted by the Red Sox and the first since Trevor Kelley in 2015.
Frick posted his best season as a Tar Heel in 2023, with career-highs in every statistical offensive category. He led the team in batting average (.319), hits (74), doubles (22), multi-hit games (23), and multi-RBI games (17). Frick ranked fifth in the ACC in two-base hits while belting a career-high 12 home runs with 60 RBIs.
He is the ninth Tar Heel to be drafted by the Yankees and the first since Joey Lancelotti in 2019.
There have been 222 UNC players selected in the Major League Baseball Draft since it was instituted in 1965.
