Sam Williams Collects ACC Preseason Honors
August 16, 2023 | Men's Soccer
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - North Carolina men's soccer midfielder Sam Williams was named to the 2023 ACC Preseason Watch List, the conference announced Wednesday morning.
A 2022 ACC All-Freshman Team selection a season ago, Williams appeared in 17 contests during his first season in Chapel Hill, earning the start 14 times. The Tenafly, N.J. native finished fourth on the Tar Heels with two goals and six points, while logging 1,262 minutes of action, which includes playing the full 90 minutes in four matches. In the classroom last season, Williams earned his first career All-ACC Academic Team honor.
Also collecting recognition on the national level, the sophomore landed at No. 16 last campaign in Top Drawer Soccer's Division I Midseason Freshman List, and was called up to the U.S. U19 Men's National Team training camp roster, being just one of two players currently playing at the collegiate level to earn the selection.
As a team, Carolina earned one first-place vote in the Coastal Division. In the 2023 ACC Preseason Coaches Poll, Clemson landed first with six votes, followed by Wake Forest with two votes, and Duke, Pitt, Syracuse, and Virginia each collecting a tally.
The men's soccer preseason concludes this Friday, when the Tar Heels welcome James Madison to Dorrance Field for a 7 PM matchup.
