August 17, 2023 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – University of North Carolina women's soccer senior midfielder Sam Meza is one of 56 players across Division I named to the 2023 Hermann Trophy Watch List, as announced by United Soccer Coaches on Thursday afternoon.
The Hermann Trophy, presented annually by the Missouri Athletic Club, is the nation's highest individual honor recognizing the National Player of the Year as determined by the voting of Division I coaches who are members of United Soccer Coaches.
A Third Team All-America selection last year, Meza has solidified herself as one of the top midfielders in the country. She tallied two goals and four assists in 16 appearances as a junior, also garnering First Team All-ACC and First Team All-Atlantic Region honors.
The Dallas, Texas native was one of a league-leading three Tar Heels named to the Preseason All-ACC Team and was also tabbed to the United Soccer Coaches' Midfielders to Watch list.
After the fall season, 15 women's players will become Hermann Trophy semifinalists on Nov. 15 following completion of Division I All-America voting. On Dec. 6, the top three players from a final round of voting will be the 2023 finalists. The winner is set to be revealed on Jan. 5, 2024, at a ceremony at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo.
The second-ranked Tar Heels open their 2023 season Thursday night at Penn State with kickoff set for 7 p.m. ET in University Park, Pa. The team then returns to Chapel Hill for its home opener on Aug. 20, hosting California at 1 p.m. at Dorrance Field.
