Field Hockey Selects Team Captains
August 18, 2023 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Seniors Katie Dixon and Romea Riccardo have been selected as captains for the 2023 North Carolina field hockey team. They were picked in a team vote after having served in the same capacity during the spring season.
Dixon is a senior midfielder from Cary, N.C. She has been a key reserve for the Tar Heels for the past three seasons and recently was named to the 2023-34 U.S. National Team.
Riccardo is a fifth-year senior defender from Downingtown, Pa. She has started on the back line in each of the past four years after redshirting the 2018 season.
"Katie and Romea have proven themselves to be outstanding leaders for our team, on and off the pitch," UNC coach Erin Matson said. "They lead by example and make those around them better. There is no question that they will continue to grow and learn together.
"They were selected by their teammates, which shows the respect they have earned, and the staff echoes that decision. I am proud to name them this year's team captains."
The Tar Heels host Duke on Sunday at noon for an exhibition game before kicking off the regular season on Aug. 25 by hosting the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. Wake Forest will take on Iowa at 6 p.m. and the Tar Heels will meet Michigan at 8:30, with both games at Karen Shelton Stadium. The opponents will flip on Sunday with Wake facing Michigan at 10:30 a.m. and UNC taking on Iowa at 1 p.m.
