August 26, 2023 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina field hockey team plays for its second top-10 win of the weekend Sunday afternoon, hosting Iowa for a 1 p.m. game at Karen Shelton Stadium.
The first game of Sunday's ACC/Big Ten Challenge action is set for 10:30 a.m., with Wake Forest taking on Michigan.
Both UNC and Iowa won their season-opening matchups on Friday, with the Hawkeyes beating the Demon Deacons 4-0 and the Tar Heels topping the Wolverines 3-2 in front of the largest crowd in stadium history, more than 1,700 fans.
All four teams were ranked in the top 12 in the preseason national poll, with Carolina at No. 1, Michigan No. 4, Iowa No. 7 and Wake Forest No. 12.
Heels vs. Hawkeyes
• UNC and Iowa are meeting for the 37th time in a series that dates back to 1984.
• As is tradition, the teams are meeting on Day 2 of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
• The teams have split the last two meetings, with Iowa winning on its home turf in 2021 and the Tar Heels storming back for an overtime victory in 2022 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
• The teams' last meeting in Chapel Hill came in May of 2021, in the delayed 2020 NCAA semifinals. The Tar Heels won that game 3-0 at Karen Shelton Stadium and went on to win the national championship.
• In last season's game, the Hawkeyes scored 3:43 into the action and led 2-0 at halftime on what would be their only two shots of the game. Carolina scored in the 42nd (Lisa Slinkert) and 53rd minutes (Sietske Brüning) to tie the game at 2-2 and send it into overtime. Erin Matson scored just under four minutes into the extra period to give Carolina the win. UNC finished with 22 shots on the day and didn't allow a penalty corner.
