September 26, 2023 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina's crop of 24 baseball newcomers ranks as the nation's No. 12 recruiting class, according to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, which released its annual rankings Tuesday.
The class includes 14 high school student-athletes, six NCAA Division I transfers, three junior college transfers, and one NCAA Division III transfer. Fourteen of the newcomers are pitchers, and 10 are position players.
The Division I transfers include two pitchers, Ryan Fischer from New Jersey Tech and Shea Sprague from Elon, along with infielders Eliot Dix (Longwood) and Parks Harber (Georgia), along with Quinnipiac outfielder Anthony Donofrio and Elon catcher Parker Haskin.
Eight of the 14 prep student-athletes are North Carolina natives, including NCBCA 4A Player of the Year Luke Stevenson, NCBCA 2A Pitcher of the Year Folger Boaz and a host of all-state pitchers.
Carolina's class was ranked the best in the Atlantic Coast Conference, ahead of No. 15 Louisville, No. 18 Florida State, and No. 19 Georgia Tech. The Tar Heels were the only school in North Carolina ranked among the top 20.
UNC's class was previously ranked No. 10 by Perfect Game, the highest ranking among any ACC team.
The Diamond Heels are amid fall workouts, culminating with the annual Fall World Series, beginning Oct. 24 at Boshamer Stadium.
Before the Blue-Navy intrasquad series, UNC will host Liberty in an exhibition game on Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. Games will be open to the public with free admission.
