Sentnor Picks Up ACC Offensive Player Of The Week Honor
September 26, 2023 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Another week, another Atlantic Coast Conference weekly honor for the University of North Carolina women's soccer team. Redshirt sophomore Ally Sentnor has been named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Tuesday.
This is the second weekly honor of her career, the first which came on Oct. 25, 2022.
The Tar Heels own half of the ACC player of the week awards this season. Avery Patterson also earned the offensive accolade on Sept. 12, while Savy King (Aug. 22, Sept. 5), Sam Meza (Aug. 29) and Maycee Bell (Sept. 19) have earned the honor on the defensive side.
UNC has had five or more ACC players of the week in a single season on two occasions – 2006 (seven) and 2017 (10) – since the league started handing out weekly awards in 1996. However, this is the first time in program history the Tar Heels have had players receive a league honor in consecutive weeks beginning in week one.
Sentnor collected the award after scoring two goals and adding an assist during No. 1 North Carolina's 1-0-1 weekend, helping the Tar Heels remain undefeated.
The Hanson, Mass. native scored the game-winner at No. 22 Virginia on Sept. 21 for a 1-0 UNC victory. That marked her third goal of the year, all which had been game-winners.
She then added another goal in a 3-3 thriller with No. 3 Florida State on Sept. 24 to level the game at one apiece in the 42nd minute. Sentnor also had an assist in the 86th minute for a three-point effort.
"Ally is doing everything right. The amount of energy she spends working for us both defensively and offensively is extraordinary," said head coach Anson Dorrance. "She is following our cliché of 'live on a never-ending ascension.' We see it in practice each day and we see it in every game. She's so ambitious and hard working. I enjoy watching her get better and better and better, and I know she will continue to do so."
Sentnor now leads the roster with 11 points and 45 shots and is tied for the team lead with four goals. Her 45 shots and 4.1 shots per game (16 and 5.3, respectively, in ACC play) also sit atop the league standings.
