CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The North Carolina Tar Heels were triumphant over Queens University in their season-opening meet for a third consecutive year with the women posting a 180-77 victory and the men recording a 148.5-111.5 win at the Levine Aquatic Center.
Carolina started strong with wins in the first 13 events and finished by claiming 10 of the final 15 races. On the women's side, the Tar Heels took the top three spots in the 100, 200 and 500 free, 100 and 200 back, 200 breast, and 200 IM. UNC took the top three on the men's side in the 100 and 200 fly. Both teams captured first and second place in the 1000 free, while women were one and two in the 100 breast and the men in the 100 back.
UNC won all 14 events on the women's side, while the Carolina men's team captured eight.
"It was a great start to our season to go on the road and dominate against a good team," head coach Mark Gangloff said. "We have a lot of newcomers on our team, and it was fun to watch them step up."
Graduate transfer Delaney Carlton took home her first two wins as a Tar Heel in the women's 50 and 100 freestyle. Freshmen Samantha Armand and Ben Delmar swept the 100 and 200 breaststroke races in their first collegiate meet.
Carlton edged out Queens' Danielle Melilli by 0.37 in the 50 freestyle while touching in front of teammate Greer Pattison by 0.20 to win the 100 freestyle. Armand narrowly reached the wall ahead of fellow transfer Katja Pavicevic to win the 100 breaststroke by 0.44. Her victory over Pavicevic in the 200 breaststroke was by a more comfortable 0.76.
Graduate Ellie VanNote was another multi-event winner, claiming first place in the 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly.
Junior Elizabeth Sowards (200 IM) and sophomores Emma Karam (200 back), Michelle Morgan (500 free), Lilly Reader (1000 free), and Madeline Smith (200 free) won their first races in Carolina Blue.
Pattison touched first in the 100 backstroke.
