King Grabs Second ACC Defensive Player Of The Week Award
September 5, 2023 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Only three weeks into her collegiate career, University of North Carolina freshman defender Savy King has already collected her second Atlantic Coast Conference weekly honor. The league announced her as the Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday morning.
King first earned the accolade after opening weekend on Aug. 22 before midfielder Sam Meza garnered the same honor on Aug. 29. The Tar Heels now own all of the ACC defensive awards given this season.
Carolina's starting center back, King continues to anchor the Tar Heels' rock-solid back line. She helped keep Gardner-Webb shotless during the first half – and held them to just one shot total – which was the third consecutive game UNC had kept its opponent shotless during the opening frame.
The West Hills, California native then guided a UNC defensive unit that limited No. 8 Arkansas to only 10 shots the entire contest, the fewest the Southeastern Conference preseason favorite has taken all season. The Razorbacks, which averaged 4.25 goals per game heading into Chapel Hill, could only break through to score one.
Following the Tar Heels' top-10 win over Arkansas, head coach Anson Dorrance said King "continues to be the final bastion of the UNC defense. She was all over the back solving problems for us, and she is an absolute magnificent defender."
Largely due to King's efforts, the Tar Heels have only conceded two goals the entire season, including a 369 minute stretch spanning five games without giving up a goal. The team has also kept their opponents to an average of just four shots per game.
King also leads the team in minutes with 496, and she has logged a full 90 minutes in four of UNC's six matches.
