Pole Vaulters Excel On Day Two Of Virginia Tech Invitational
January 13, 2024 | Track & Field
BLACKSBURG— On Saturday, day two of the Virginia Tech Invitational, nine Tar Heels competed in six field events, led by a record performance in pole vaulting.
Paul Signorelli and Ben Finger came in first and second in the men's pole vault, recording personal bests of 5.20m. These marks are tied for the sixth-best vaults in school history.
The day kicked off with the Tar Heel tandem of senior Sydney Banks competing in the women's high jump and freshman Megan Kelleghan competing in the seeded women's pole vault.
Banks came in third in the women's high jump with a leap of 1.65m. In her first meet, Kelleghan had the best women's pole vault by a Tar Heel since 2022 and tied for the 11th-best vault in Carolina history.
The Tar Heels continued their strong showing in field events, particularly jumps and vaults, after Friday's successes.
Peyton Berryman was the highlight of Friday's performance from the Tar Heels as she finished second in the unseeded women's pole vault. She won last year's pole vault with a best jump of 3.93 meters at the Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg.
The Tar Heels will be back in action for their only home meet of the year, the Dick Taylor Challenge, on Saturday, January 20th. This will be the first meet of the 2023-2024 season that will see the whole team compete together.
