January 16, 2024 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina baseball team received its second top-15 ranking ahead of the 2024 campaign, checking in at No. 15 in the D1 Preseason Top 25 poll. The Tar Heels were also ranked No. 14 in the Perfect Game preseason rankings.
UNC is one of six ACC teams in the D1 Baseball Top 25, joining top-ranked Wake Forest, No. 10 Clemson, No. 12 Duke, No. 13 NC State and No. 14 Virginia. The Tar Heels also have three non-conference opponents in the poll, with No. 11 East Carolina, No. 18 Coastal Carolina, and No. 25 South Carolina receiving preseason recognition.
The Tar Heels made their sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance – the longest active streak in the ACC – last season. They posted a 36-24 overall record, which included 13 victories over teams that participated in the postseason a year ago.
UNC returns seven starting position players, including preseason All-America outfielder Vance Honeycutt and All-ACC Freshman Team outfielder Casey Cook, along with infielders Johnny Castagnozzi, Hunter Stokely, Jackson Van De Brake, Colby Wilkerson and designated hitter Alberto Osuna.
Senior pitchers Connor Bovair, Jake Knapp, Ben Peterson, and Matt Poston return along with sophomore hurlers Matthew Matthijs, Cameron Padgett, Dalton Pence, and Kyle Percival.
Twenty-four players have joined the Tar Heel ranks for the upcoming season, including 14 freshmen, six NCAA Division I transfers, three junior college transfers and one NCAA Division III newcomer.
D1 Baseball ranked UNC's freshman class as the third-best in the country, while Perfect Game ranked the overall group of newcomers 10th.
The Tar Heels will open the 2024 season with a three-game series against Wagner at Boshamer Stadium from Feb. 16-18.
