Armstrong Selected To U.S. U-17 FIFA World Cup Roster
October 1, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina women's soccer freshman Trinity Armstrong will represent the United States at the upcoming FIFA Under-17 World Cup, as announced by U.S. Soccer on Tuesday afternoon. The tournament will take place from Oct. 16-Nov. 3 in the Dominican Republic.
A defender, Armstrong is one of four college players on the U.S. roster. Players born on or after Jan. 1, 2007, are age-eligible for this World Cup.
The 2024 FIFA U17 Women's World Cup will feature 16 nations divided into four groups of four teams. The U.S. will be in Group B along with Colombia, Korea Republic and reigning champion Spain. The top two finishers in each group advance to quarterfinals of the knockout round.Â
The stars and stripes open the tournament against Spain on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Felix Sanchez Stadium in Santo Domingo. The complete schedule can be found here.
Armstrong will arrive in the Dominican Republic with four international caps on her resume. She was the youngest player on the U.S. squad that won the Concacaf U17 Championships in February to secure a spot in the World Cup. She was named captain against Puerto Rico in that tournament.Â
Enrolling in college a year early, Armstrong has quickly become an anchor on Carolina's back line. She has helped limit opponents to just 6.5 shots per game and 2.7 shots on goal per game, in addition to being instrumental in seven shutouts on the season.Â
The Frisco, Texas native has started all 12 matches and ranks fourth on the team – and first among all rookies – with 993 minutes. She was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 24, becoming the first freshman to win the award this season.
