Armstrong, Team USA Start FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup
October 15, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina freshman defender Trinity Armstrong is set to compete with the United States Under-17 Youth National Team at the 2024 FIFA U17 World Cup in the Dominican Republic. The tournament runs from Oct. 16-Nov. 3.
The 17-year-old Armstrong is one of four college players on the U.S. roster. Players born on or after Jan. 1, 2007, are age-eligible for this World Cup.
Armstrong begins the World Cup with four international caps already on her resume. She was the youngest player on the U.S. squad that won the Concacaf U17 Championships in February to secure a spot in the World Cup. She was named captain against Puerto Rico in that tournament.
The 2024 FIFA U17 Women's World Cup will feature 16 nations divided into four groups of four teams. The top two finishers in each group advance to quarterfinals of the knockout round.
Team USA is in Group B along with Spain, Colombia and Korea Republic. The stars and stripes open the FIFA U17 Women's World Cup on Wednesday, Oct. 16, against reigning U17 champion Spain at 4 p.m. ET.
Enrolling in college a year early, Armstrong quickly became an anchor on Carolina's back line. She helped limit opponents to 6.5 shots per game and 2.7 shots on goal per game – in addition to being instrumental in seven shutouts on the season – before leaving for youth national team duties on Oct. 6.
The Frisco, Texas native started the first 12 matches of the season. She was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 24, becoming the first freshman to win the award this season.
