VB Sweeps Duke In Durham

DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina volleyball team extended their win streak to seven on Wednesday night, defeating Duke in straight sets (25-16, 25-21, 25-23) in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The victory is the Tar Heels' eighth in the last 10 meetings with the Blue Devils.
Carolina (11-1, 3-0 ACC) overpowered Duke (6-8, 2-1 ACC) offensively, outhitting them .333-208 in the match, led by redshirt sophomore Chelsea Thorpe (.500) and graduate Alexis Engelbrecht (.462).
Thorpe had a match-best 11 kills, followed by senior Mabrey Shaffmaster with 10 kills and a match-best 11 digs, her second straight double-double and third in the last four matches.
At the service line, five different Carolina players tallied an ace, led by Shaffmaster and sophomore Safi Hampton who had three apiece.
Freshman Jackie Taylor and graduate Emani' Foster combined for seven of Carolina's eight block assists.
After dominating the first set, never trailing and hitting a blazing .556, the Tar Heels squeaked out a second set victory that included seven ties and three lead changes.
Carolina trailed 16-11 midway through the third set before kicking it into gear.
Following a 7-2 run, including three straight kills, the Tar Heels took a 22-21 lead. The Blue Devils then tallied three straight points of their own to make it 23-22, before Carolina earned the set victory and sweep with three straight points to end the set.
The frame included eight ties and four lead changes.
The Tar Heels and Blue Devils will rematch on Friday in Carmichael Arena at 7 p.m.
