Five Selected To U.S. Women’s Sixes Lacrosse Squad
October 3, 2024 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Five former North Carolina women's lacrosse standouts have been named to the 17-person U.S. Women's Sixes roster, as announced by USA Lacrosse on Wednesday. Sixes Lacrosse is the version of the sport that will be played in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
The five Tar Heels named to the squad include Ally Mastroianni ('21), current assistant coach Marie McCool ('18), Taylor Moreno ('21), Caylee Waters ('17) and Kayla Wood ('21).
All five were invited to a Sixes training camp back in June. Carolina is tied with Boston College for the most players represented on the roster.
The team will play against international competition at the inaugural USA Lacrosse Experience in Indianapolis, Indiana, later this month.
Team USA will play Colombia and Puerto Rico on Friday, Oct. 11, before taking on Great Britain on Saturday, Oct. 12. Both contests will be held at Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis. Prior to the games, the group will conduct a three-day training camp from Oct. 8-10.
Three players in Mastroianni, Moreno and Wood recently won gold at the inaugural World Lacrosse Women's Box Championships in Utica, New York, last weekend. Mastroianni, McCool and Waters won gold with Team USA at the 2022 World Championship, with McCool also winning in 2017.
The U.S. has only competed in international competition in sixes on three previous occasions.
In 2021, USA Lacrosse hosted a three-team Super Sixes event with Canada and the Haudenosaunee. The U.S. and Canada each went 3-1 at the round-robin event. In 2022, Canada defeated the U.S. 14-12 in the gold medal game at The World Games. Last fall, the U.S. beat Canada 8-7 in the championship game of the Super Sixes event in Canada.
