Women’s Soccer Secures No. 2 Seed In 2024 NCAA Tournament
November 11, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The only team to appear in every NCAA Tournament, North Carolina begins its quest for the 23rd national championship in program history after securing a No. 2 seed in the 2024 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament.
The Tar Heels will host USC Upstate in the first round in Chapel Hill on Friday, Nov. 15. Kickoff at Dorrance Field is at 6 p.m. ET and tickets will be available for purchase here.
The winner of Friday's match will advance to the second round the following weekend to face the winner of Santa Clara-BYU.
More information about the NCAA Tournament, including the official bracket, can be found here.
Interim head coach Damon Nahas has led the Tar Heels to a top-2 national seed for the 37th time in program history. Carolina has won five NCAA titles as a No. 2 seed, including its last one in 2012.
Currently slotted at No. 2, the Tar Heels have been in the top four of the NCAA RPI all season. They also checked in at No. 8 in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll and will enter the NCAA Tournament with a 16-5 (7-3 ACC) record.
This marks the 43rd straight NCAA Tournament appearance for Carolina, which is the only team to appear in every tournament dating back to the inaugural one in 1982. UNC has won 21 of 42 NCAA women's soccer titles, also winning the AIAW national championship in 1981. No other program has more than four NCAA crowns.
All under recently-retired head coach Anson Dorrance, the Tar Heels last won the national title in 2012 and have finished as the national runner-up on six occasions. Carolina owns a 147-18-5 (.879) record in the NCAA Tournament.
UNC's 22 national titles are the most by a team in women's soccer history, and the Tar Heels are also first in College Cups (31), championship game appearances (27), wins (147) and games (170).
