Corner Dominance Propels Heels To ACC Semifinal Win
November 6, 2024 | Field Hockey
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – North Carolina field hockey booked its 10th straight trip to the ACC Championship final on Wednesday afternoon with a decisive 3-1 win over the No. 5 seed Syracuse.
The Tar Heels (17-0) scored all three of their goals off of penalty corners with Charly Bruder taking two before Pleun Lammers picked up the third to put the game away. Carolina tied its season-high with 15 corners on the day while not giving any such chances to the Orange. It is the biggest disparity in corner chances in any game this season.
Bruder seems determined to put an even tighter hold on her title as the nation's leading goal scorer. The two goals today put her up to 25 on the year, good for a tie for 10th in a single-season in program history (Imke Lempers – 1989). She now sits just two shy of her head coach Erin Matson's total of 27 from her final two years, which would put Bruder into a five-way tie for fourth all-time.
The killer corner has been Bruder's bread and butter all season and today was no different. The first came off a traditional straight up shot from the top of the circle, but the second was a thing of beauty. Five different Tar Heels were involved in the routine that eventually found its way back to Bruder who rocketed it home from the right side.
In the third quarter, yet another corner resulted in a goal for the Heels thanks to smart placement from Lammers. After the insert, she waited patiently on the far post where the ball dropped to her and she finished smartly.
Carolina will play the winner of Duke and Boston College in the final on Friday at noon ET. It will be the 10th straight year in which the Tar Heels have fought their way to the final game. The team has won seven straight in those contests and will be going for their 27th ACC tournament title.
