Tar Heel Trio Reach United Soccer Coaches All-America Status
December 7, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Three North Carolina women's soccer players have earned All-America honors from United Soccer Coaches. Kate Faasse was named to the first team with Trinity Armstrong on the second team and Tessa Dellarose on the fourth team.
Faasse is the first Tar Heel to be named First Team All-America since Brianna Pinto in 2020. Armstrong is the first UNC rookie to earn All-America honors since Alessia Russo also landed on the second team in 2017.
The Tar Heels have had at least one All-America selection each season since the honor began in 1980.
The honors keep rolling in for Faasse, who was also tabbed to the United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region First Team, All-ACC First Team and ACC All-Tournament Team, in addition to recently being chosen as a semifinalist for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy.
Faasse is in the midst of a breakout junior season, as the forward is the nation's outright leader with 20 goals. Her 44 points also lead the conference and is second in the country. She has eight game-winning goals – including the golden goal in the NCAA Quarterfinals – which ranks first in the ACC and NCAA.
Her 44 points and 20 goals are the most by a Tar Heel in a single season since Casey Nogueria had 58 and 25, respectively, in 2008. She is the eighth UNC player to record 40+ points in one year since the turn of the century, and the fourth with 20+ goals.
The Phoenix, Arizona native has five braces on the year, three which have come during the postseason. She is the first UNC player to have 3+ braces in one season since Alessia Russo had five in 2019. In fact, only three Tar Heels have had 3+ braces in a single season in the last decade: Faasse (5, 2024), Russo (5, 2019) and Bridgette Andrzejewski (4, 2016).
Despite only being in her freshman year, Armstrong has continued to show why she is regarded as one of the best defenders in the country. She has anchored UNC's back line which has kept its opponents to 8.0 shots per game and 3.8 shots on goal per game. Her first collegiate goal was the game-winner in the ACC Tournament semifinals.
Armstrong was named to the All-Atlantic Region First Team, the first UNC rookie to snag first-team praise since Maycee Bell in 2019. Armstrong was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 24 – the only true freshman to win the honor this year – as well as the ACC All-Tournament Team.
The Dallas, Texas native was also tabbed to both the All-ACC First Team and ACC All-Freshman Team, becoming the first Tar Heel to be named to the First Team and Freshman Team since 2017.
After playing every minute at the FIFA U17 World Cup and leading Team USA to bronze, Armstrong was recently announced as a nominee for the 2024 U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year award. She is the youngest of the five finalists and the only collegian.
One of this year's co-captains, Dellarose has started every match and has four goals and 15 points in addition to a team-leading seven assists. The midfielder netted her third game-winning goal in the NCAA Second Round against Santa Clara and is third on the team with 2,191 minutes as the only player with 15 games of a full 90+ minutes.
Dellarose was selected to the All-ACC Third Team as well as the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team for her efforts in the classroom. She has been named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week three times, the most of any Tar Heel this season.
A native of Grindstone, Pennsylvania, she also garnered All-Atlantic Region Second Team honors for the first time in her career.
