Kayla Smith led the Tar Heels with a 70 and the University of North Carolina finished tied for eighth with host Michigan State in a rain-shortened Spartan Sun Coast Invitational Monday at the Palm Are Country Club's Champions Course in Sarasota, Fla.
Carolina shot 5-over-par 293 in today's second round to finish the 36-hole event 14-over 590. Ohio State won the team title at even par, two strokes ahead of the College of Charleston and four better than Tennessee.
Ohio State's Kary Hollenbaugh won the individual title, shooting 71-65 for an 8-under 136 total and four-shot victory.
UNC's Megan Streicher (71-73) tied for 11th place at even par 144. Smith made three birdies and only bogey for a 2-under 70 that helped her jump four spots to 16th 1-over 145.
Inez Ng (75-77) tied for 45th at 8 over, Reagan Southerland (76-78) tied for 58th at 10 over and Ing Iadpluem and Vilde Nystrøm tied for 61st at 12 over.
"Today was a frustrating day, with the weather and the way we played," says UNC head coach Aimee Neff. "It wasn't a good day for us and we know we can play better than we did. We just didn't convert enough of the chances we had on the golf course. But we will learn for this and get ready for Gainesville in a few weeks."
The tournament was shortened to 36 holes after Sunday's second round was canceled due to heavy rain.
Carolina returns to competition March 2-3 in Gainesville, Fla., at the Florida Gators Invitational.
