OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The North Carolina rowing team faces off against outside competition this weekend for the first time in 2024, racing at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational. In addition to host Louisville, the event also includes Alabama, Clemson, Duke, Indiana, Navy, Notre Dame, San Diego, and Wisconsin.
Action will take place at the Melton Lake Rowing Venue. For results throughout the weekend, click here.
"We're very young so it's a first trip down the course for a lot of these guys," UNC coach Erin Neppel said. "They're very excited about how their training has been going. We're just untested at this point so this will be a good chance to go out and see some people wearing other uniforms.
UNC opens racing on Saturday morning against Clemson and Duke, with all six Tar Heel boats facing off against the Tigers and Blue Devils between 9 and 10 a.m. In the afternoon session, Carolina will face Alabama, Wisconsin and USD beginning shortly after 4 p.m.
On Sunday morning, the Tar Heels will see Louisville and USD.
"I do like this race because you see different teams in the different sessions, so each one feels like its own race," Neppel said. "It's an interesting format – you get to turn right around and go do it again."
That format will allow the young Tar Heels to build throughout the weekend, continuing to learn and grow.
"We've talked a lot about how this is the middle of March, let's see where we are and just go from there," Neppel said. "So far they're ahead of schedule as far as where we were expecting them to be at this time, so we're hoping to have some good races."
