Tar Heels Sweep Irish, 4-0

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—Will Peters won the clincher at No. 5 singles as North Carolina blanked Notre Dame, 4-0, on a breezy Friday afternoon at the Chewning Tennis Center.
The Tar Heels, who are up to No. 24 in the ITA national rankings this week, improved to 12-5 this season and 6-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina has won nine of its last 11 matches.
Notre Dame fell to 10-11 overall and 1-5 in the ACC.
UNC got doubles wins from Peters and Karl Poling (No. 3) and Peter Murphy and Patrick Schoen (No. 2) to clinch the doubles point to start the day.
Schoen and Watane picked up straight-set singles wins at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively, to give the Tar Heels a 3-0 lead before Peters clinched the victory in the No. 6 slot.
Carolina improved to 24-9 all-time against the Fighting Irish.
How It Happened
Doubles
• The Fighting Irish won the first doubles match when the 13th-ranked duo of Sebastian Dominko and Jean-Marc Malkowski beat Benjamin Kittay and Phillip Jordan at No. 1, 6-4.
• The Tar Heels rallied with back-to-back wins at No. 3 and No. 2 to clinch the doubles point.
• Peters and Poling picked up a victory at No. 3 when they beat Evan Lee and Yu Zhang, 6-3.
• Schoen and Murphy won the clinching doubles match at No. 2. The Tar Heel duo broke Nil Giraldez and Chase Thompson to take a 4-3 lead, going on to pick up another break and win, 6-3.
Singles
• Schoen dominated his match with Jameson Corsillo at No. 4, winning quickly by a score of 6-1, 6-0 to make it 2-0 Tar Heels.
• Watane gave the Tar Heels their next victory, topping Zhang, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6 for a 3-0 advantage.
• At No. 5, Peters gutted out a come-from-behind, 7-6 (5) win in the first set. He had an easier time in the second set, winning 6-3.
• It was much the same at No. 2 for Jordan, who edged Giraldez by a 7-6 (6) score in the first set, then took a commanding, 5-1, lead in the second before his match went unfinished.
• Poling (No. 4) and Kittay (No. 1) both saw their matches end unfinished as well.

The Tar Heels will play their final regular season home match of the 2024 season when they host No. 38 Louisville on Sunday at noon at the Chewning Tennis Center.
