March 5, 2024 | Baseball
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Casey Cook ripped a 105-mph single off the glove of second baseman Chandler Riley to break a 3-3 ninth-inning tie and propel No. 16 North Carolina to a 7-3 win over No. 21 Campbell at Jim Perry Stadium Tuesday.
Cook went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a double, Anthony Donofrio drove in two runs and had two hits, Vance Honeycutt collected three hits, and Alberto Osuna had a pair of base knocks.
The Tar Heels (11-2) put their first three hitters on base in the ninth to set the table for Cook. Colby Wilkerson walked before Alex Madera, and Honeycutt reached on bunt singles.
After Wilkerson scored on Cook's laser to second, Donofrio delivered a ground-rule double that brought Madera and Honeycutt home to break open the game. Osuna produced the game's final run with a single up the middle.
Senior Matt Poston (1-0) picked up his first win of the season with two scoreless innings pitched. After he issued a lead-off walk in the eighth, he struck out the next two batters he faced and induced a flyout to end the inning.
He retired the side in order in the ninth.
Poston was one of six Carolina hurlers to pitch. Dalton Pence struck out five in 2 1/3 innings, and Matthew Matthijs fanned four in two innings, striking out the side in the sixth.
Cook's two-out double in the third plated a pair of runs to put the Tar Heels on top, 3-1, after Honeycutt singled to drive in Jackson Van De Brake with the tying-run.
Campbell (8-4) scored a run in the fifth and then tied the game with a sacrifice fly by Lawson Harrill in the seventh.
Jackson Roberts (2-1) allowed three runs on three hits in the ninth and suffered his first loss. Campbell starter Cole Peschl pitched 4 2/3 innings and surrendered three runs on three hits.
Campbell left fielder Dalen Thompson went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Harrill drove in the other two runs.
The Tar Heels open ACC play this weekend, March 8-10, against Pittsburgh. Friday's series opener is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
