April 18, 2024 | Men's Golf
The North Carolina men's golf team enters the 2024 ACC Championship as the No. 1 seed in the tournament and No. 2 team in the country in the Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches' poll (No. 4 in current NCAA/Scoreboard rankings).
Â
The Tar Heels have won six of their 10 tournaments this season, the most wins in a season since claiming six titles in 1984-85.
Â
The 2024 ACC Championship will be contested Friday through Monday, April 19-22, at the Charlotte Country Club, the first time ever the city of Charlotte is hosting the men's golf tournament. All 12 teams will play 18 holes of stroke play on each of the first three days with the top four advancing to match play on Monday, April 22.
Â
The semifinals are scheduled to begin on Monday at 7:30 a.m. Both the semifinal and championship matches will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
Â
Carolina is paired with Florida State and Virginia in Friday's first round with play getting under way on the first tee at 10 a.m.
Â
The Tar Heels start a veteran group that has played in a combined 13 previous conference championships.
Â
Graduate student Austin Greaser (Vandalia, Ohio) and senior Peter Fountain (Raleigh) each have played in three ACC Championships, junior David Ford (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) played in the last two ACC Tournaments, fifth-year senior Dylan Menante (Carlsbad, Calif.) competed in two West Coast Conference Tournaments and the 2023 ACC Championship and junior Maxwell Ford (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) played in the last two SEC Tournaments.
Â
Fountain was the ACC medalist as a freshman in 2021, when he shot 71-66-63 for a 10-under 200 in Milton, Ga. A year later, Fountain shot 68-67-68 for a 13-under 203 to tie for the lead and finished second in a playoff with Clemson's Jacob Bridgeman. He holds UNC records for best round (63), best nine holes (28 on the back nine in the final round in 2021), low 54 holes (200 in 2021) and low score to par for 54 holes (13 under in 2022).
Â
Greaser tied for fifth as a sophomore in 2021, the first of two consecutive years when the Tar Heels finished first in stroke play (UNC was 26 under in 2021 and 35 under in 2022). He is one of four Tar Heels to shoot in the 60s in all three rounds of stroke play in an ACC Championship.
Â
David Ford tied for seventh in 2022 and tied for 14th last season. His brother, Maxwell, tied for 18th as a freshman in the 2022 SEC Championship.
Â
Menante shot 11 under and finished second in a playoff in 2021 in the WCC Championship. Last year, he led UNC in the ACC Championship at the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst with a tie for seventh place at 5 under.
Â
David Ford holds Carolina's career scoring average record at 70.42 and is 84 under par in 33 tournaments as a Tar Heel. Menante (70.76), Greaser (71.10) and Fountain (71.54) rank second, third and fifth in career scoring.
Â
The Tar Heels earned the No. 1 seed as the highest ranked ACC team in the current NCAA rankings.
