April 26, 2024 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina will host a 40th anniversary reunion of the 1984 ACC Championship team at Boshamer Stadium on Saturday, April 27.
Weekend festivities include an alumni tailgate and a pregame ceremony. Former head coach and ABCA Hall of Famer Mike Roberts will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the afternoon's 2 p.m. game against Virginia Tech.
Nearly two dozen former players and staffers from the 1984 team, including All-America, MLB First Round draftees, Olympians Scott Bankhead and B.J. Surhoff, as well as All-ACC performers Jeff Hubbard and Todd Wilkinson, are scheduled to attend.
Other players and staff who have planned to attend the reunion are UNC all-time home run leader Devy Bell, Brian Chandler, Paul Devlin, Gordon Douglas, Tim Kirk, Glenn Liacouras, Jay Matthews, Mitch McCleney, Matt Merullo, Bob Mulligan, Tom Reed, Bill Robinson, Doug Torborg, Ken Turner and Paul Will along with assistant coaches Howard McCullough and Bobby Gilmore and manager Jeff Bradley.
The 1984 Tar Heels entered the season with high expectations after winning the two previous ACC championships in 1982 and '83 and the return of four All-ACC performers: Bankhead, Surhoff, Hubbard, and Walt Weiss, another future first-round pick. They swept through the ACC Tournament, winning five games in four days, for their third consecutive conference title.
After opening the tournament with a 13-2 win over Wake Forest, the Tar Heels blanked Maryland 4-0 behind Bankhead to advance to the third round, defeating NC State 13-12. UNC beat Clemson 7-6 in the semifinals before taking down Georgia Tech in the championship game 9-4. Wilkinson was named the tournament MVP.
Carolina earned its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance en route to a 44-win campaign, that included a 12-2 ACC record, and a final national ranking of No. 11.
Bankhead, Hubbard, Surhoff, Weiss, and Wilkinson earned First-Team All-ACC honors, while Surhoff and pitcher Roger Williams were named second team. Surhoff was named first-team all-conference as a first baseman and second-team all-conference as a designated hitter.
A year later, Surhoff was the first player selected in the 1985 Major League Baseball Draft after earning First-Team All-America honors for the second consecutive season.
The 1984 Tar Heels compiled a .322 team batting average and 3.89 ERA. Surhoff paced the Carolina offense in multiple categories, including batting average (.400), runs (65), and hits (98), while Wilkinson led the team in home runs (14) and RBIs (57). Bankhead finished the season 11-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 124 strikeouts, fifth-most strikeouts in a single-season in program history.
The 2024 Tar Heels (31-10, 15-6 ACC) open their series against Virginia Tech (26-12, 12-9) Friday at 6 p.m. The series finale is slated for Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games will stream on ACC Network Extra.
Saturday's game sold out, but limited tickets remain for Friday and Sunday's games. Fans can purchase tickets at GoHeels.com or the Boshamer Stadium ticket office on game day.
