CARY, N.C. – University of North Carolina outfielder Vance Honeycutt was among the 25 amateur baseball players selected as semifinalists for the 2024 Golden Spikes Award, USA Baseball announced Monday.
He is the first Tar Heel to be named a semifinalist for the award since J.B. Bukauskas in 2017 and the ninth different player in program history.
The 46th Golden Spikes Award will be presented on June 22 at 7 p.m. on ESPN ahead of Game One of the College World Series finals.
"With another terrific amateur baseball season nearing the finish line, we are thrilled to honor the 25 players in the country as Golden Spikes Award semifinalists," USA Baseball CEO/Executive Director Paul Seiler said. "These athletes have put together tremendous seasons and are extremely deserving of this honor. We are excited to watch the remainder of the season and to name the 46th winner of the Golden Spikes Award in June."
One of the nation's most complete players, Honeycutt is the only 20-20 player in NCAA Division I with 22 home runs and 28 stolen bases. He has the ninth-highest WAR (4.7) among all Division I players and ranks fourth nationally in defensive runs saved (DRS) at 12.07, the highest among all ACC players and Division I outfielders.
Honeycutt was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season earlier today.
A 2024 first-team All-ACC pick, Honeycutt ranks second in the league in both categories and leads the conference with 75 runs. He is seventh in slugging percentage (.700) and 10th in OPS (1.118).
Honeycutt is North Carolina's career home run leader (59) and ranks among the top 10 all-time in runs (6th/192), stolen bases (6th/76), total bases (8th/407) and walks (9th/123).
The seventh-ranked Tar Heels return to the diamond on Thursday, May 23, and face Pittsburgh in their first game of the 2024 ACC Baseball Championship at Truist Field in Charlotte. The game, which will start at 3 p.m., will be televised on ACC Network.
