Chris Miltenberg Agrees To Contract Extension
May 7, 2024 | Track & Field
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After leading the North Carolina men's cross country and track and field teams to ACC Championships for the first time in decades, Head Coach Chris Miltenberg has signed a three-year contract extension that will keep him in Chapel Hill through the 2026-27 season.
Â
Miltenberg was named 2023 Cross Country Coach of the Year by the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and Regional Coach of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) after leading Carolina to its first ACC Cross Country Championship since 1985.
Â
The Tar Heels' Director of Track & Field and Cross Country followed that up by leading the UNC men to their first ACC Indoor Title since 1996 en route to earning 2024 ACC Indoor Track Coach of the Year and USTFCCCA Regional Coach of the Year accolades.
Â
Under Miltenberg's leadership, Carolina has seen success on the national stage as well, finishing sixth at the NCAA Cross Country Championships this fall, the program's best finish since 1985. This winter, the Heels matched their best ever finish at indoor nationals, placing fifth overall, which they also did way back in 1973.
Â
"Over the course of five years, Chris Miltenberg has elevated our Cross Country and Track and Field teams while fostering a culture of integrity and success on and off the track,'' said UNC Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham. "It has been special to watch this program succeed under his guidance, and we look forward to watching Coach Miltenberg continue to mentor standout student-athletes as Carolina's coach for years to come."
Â
In just his fifth season at the helm of the program, Miltenberg has produced more than 20 All-America and All-ACC honorees, and more than 75 of his student-athletes have earned All-ACC Academic honors.
Â
"I am so grateful for our administration's belief and support in me and our program," said Miltenberg. "Bubba Cunningham and I shared a vision for what our Track & Field and Cross Country programs could become when we started in 2019 and the unwavering support of that vision is why we have the great momentum we have. I am grateful for our student-athletes, coaches and support staff for their relentless work and belief. There is nowhere I'd rather be than Carolina and I am fired up about where our program is headed."
