Three Tar Heels Named To All-ACC Softball Teams

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The North Carolina softball team placed three Tar Heels on the All-Atlantic Coast Conference softball teams, announced Wednesday by the conference office after voting by the league's head coaches.
Abby Settlemyre and Autumn Owen were all-ACC second team selections, while Sanaa Thompson was named to the all-freshman team.
A graduate student from Hickory, N.C., Settlemyre is now a two-time all-ACC selection after garnering first team honors in 2023. The Tar Heel shortstop led Carolina with a .397 batting averaging and 17 runs in conference play, 27 hits, including the sixth-most doubles (6) in the league, a conference-leading two triples, 16 RBIs and 11 walks. She batted a career-best .396 in the regular season, leading the team with 10 doubles to go with 42 hits, 27 RBIs, four home runs,13 walks and a .642 slugging percentage. Settlemyre also recorded 12 multi-hit games and nine multi-RBI games.
A graduate transfer in her first season in Chapel Hill, Owen has now received all-conference honors at all three schools she's played at. She was named to the 2019 All-Big South first team while at Gardner-Webb, was a 2023 All-Sun Belt first team selection at Marshall and is now a second team honoree in the ACC. The catcher from Mill Spring, N.C. batted .327 in conference play, leading the team in home runs (6), RBIs (18) and slugging percentage (.727). On the season she averaged .304 at the plate with 35 hits, 11 home runs, a team-high 28 walks, 39 RBIs and a .635 slugging percentage.
Thompson becomes the first Tar Heel named to the all-freshman squad since Hannah George in 2019 and third in program history. A Dallas, Ga., native, Thomspon made 42 starts in her rookie season, batting .286 in ACC play with 19 hits, two doubles, a triple, a home run, 11 RBIs and eight walks. The outfielder batted .406 on the season with 52 hits, 34 RBIs, seven doubles, five home runs, drawing 20 walks and slugging .609. Thompson started the season on a team-best 18 game hitting and 22 game on-base streak. She was named the ACC Player of the Week on Feb. 27.
The seventh-seeded Tar Heels begin their run in the 2024 ACC Championship today at 3:30 p.m. against the tenth-seed Notre Dame in Durham, N.C.
