Women’s Soccer Opens Olympic Group Stage Play
July 25, 2024 | Women's Soccer
PARIS, France – The United States began group stage play at the 2024 Olympic Games with a 3-0 win over Zambia to secure a crucial three points in Group B on Thursday, July 25. Playing in Group A, New Zealand suffered a 2-1 loss to defending Olympic champion Canada.
Three former North Carolina women's soccer standouts – New Zealand's Katie Bowen and the United States' Crystal Dunn and Emily Fox – are competing for Olympic gold over the next two weeks in France.
Wearing the captain's armband, Bowen logged a full 90 minutes inside Stade Geoffrey-Guichard in Saint-Étienne. Dunn and Fox also saw every minute on the pitch at Stade de Nice in Nice.
Today's Olympic opener marked Dunn's 150th cap for the stars and stripes, as she becomes the 26th USWNT player to reach the milestone.
Bowen (2012-15) is representing New Zealand in her fourth Olympic Games. The defender is the reigning New Zealand and Women's International Player of the Year and was an alternate in 2012 before making the 18-person roster the past three Olympiads.
Now with 11 Olympic appearances to her name, Dunn (2010-13) is part of a trio of three-time Olympians on the United States' roster. The versatile player earned bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and scored a goal in 2016 in Rio.
Making her Olympic debut for Team USA is defender Fox (2017-19). Fox, who is one of nine first-time Olympians on the USWNT, has made 51 caps for the red, white and blue.
