Duo Named D1 Baseball First Team Freshman All-America
July 5, 2024 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – UNC pitcher Jason DeCaro and catcher Luke Stevenson have been named First Team Freshman America by D1 Baseball, the organization announced on Friday.
North Carolina is the only program to place two players on the first team and one of only two programs with multiple Freshman All-Americans, along with Duke. Ten ACC players were named Freshman All-America, including the eight on the first team, which is most of any conference.
DeCaro and Stevenson were also named First Team Freshman All-America by Perfect Game last month. This is the 11th season Carolina has had multiple players earn Freshman All-America in the same year and the fourth time the Tar Heels have had three selections. Gavin Gallaher was voted second team by Perfect Game.
DeCaro, a second-team All-ACC pitcher, ranked seventh nationally among NCAA Division I freshmen with a 3.81 ERA, sixth-best overall in the conference. He allowed 7.43 hits per nine innings, sixth fewest among Division I pitchers, while holding opposing hitters to a .221 batting average. DeCaro led the ACC in starts (18) and posted a 6-1 record in 89.2 innings pitched.
A third-team all-conference player, Stevenson wrapped up his first season slashing .284/.420/.536 with 14 home runs, 58 RBIs, and a team-best 48 base on balls. He started 63 of 64 games behind the plate while ranking fourth on the team in on-base percentage, RBIs, and home runs. Stevenson finished the season with 15 multi-hit games and 13 multi-RBI games.
