July 24, 2024 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina baseball team has been honored with the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award for the 2023-24 academic year.
Â
The award honors high school and college programs coached by ABCA members that post a grade-point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the current academic year. Over 800 members were named as honorees at both the collegiate and high school levels with 470 collegiate programs being named.
The Tar Heels earned the prestigious award for the third consecutive season and fourth time in the last five years.
Â
UNC was one of seven ACC programs to receive the award this season along with Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Notre Dame, and Pitt.
Earlier this year, the Diamond Heels had six student-athletes – Casey Cook, Gavin Gallaher, Vance Honeycutt, Matthew Matthijs, Kyle Percival and Luke Stevenson – named to the All-ACC Academic Team with a total of 23 UNC players making the ACC Academic Honor Roll.
The American Baseball Coaches Association has a long tradition of recognizing the achievements of baseball coaches and student-athletes. The ABCA/Rawlings All-America Teams are the nation's oldest, founded in 1949, and the ABCA's awards program also includes the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Awards, the ABCA/ATEC Regional & National Coaches of the Year and several other major awards such as the ABCA Hall of Fame and the Dave Keilitz Ethics in Coaching Award.
