Four Wrestlers Make Semifinals At Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Four Tar Heel wrestlers advanced to the semifinals at the conclusion of day one at the 2025 Southern Scuffle.

Spencer Moore (125), Ethan Oakley (133), Jayden Scott (141) and Marcus Murabito will wrestle in the semifinals tomorrow at 10 AM.

Moore used a fall and technical fall to cruise through the opening two rounds. In the quarterfinal, the Tar Heel 125-pounder defeated Oklahoma's Beric Jordan by decision, to punch his ticket to the semifinal.

Oakley, ranked 13^th in the nation, collected back-to-back decisions to begin the tournament. While squaring off with Gable Porter of Virginia, Oakley earned the third period fall in the quarterfinal to secure the win.

After an opening match technical fall, Scott continued his day one success with a 9-7 decision against Joey Iamunno of Brown in the round of 16. Meeting Oklahoma's ninth-ranked Moshua Schwartz in the quarterfinal, the duo wrestled to a two-all deadlock after seven minutes of action. In the sudden victory period, Schwartz was handed his second stall warning of the match, awarding Scott a point to clinch the 3-2 decision.

At 184 pounds, Murabito began the day with two-straight major decision, outscoring his opponents 24-3 in the victories. In the round of 16 and quarterfinals, Murabito clinched both wins by decision, securing his path to Sunday's semifinal.

In addition to the four Tar Heel semifinalists, Derek Guanajuato (133) and Gavin Kane (184) made the quarterfinals, falling by technical fall and major decision, respectively.

At 197 pounds, Cade Lautt bounced back from his round of 16 defeat, claiming back-to-back wins in the consolation bracket and advancing to day two.

After day one, the Tar Heel stand at fourth in the team standings with 68 points, trailing No. 24 Army (97 points), No. 21 Oklahoma (92.5 points) and No. 1 Penn State (77 points).
