Gagne Inks Contract With Kansas City Current
January 8, 2025 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 2024 NCAA College Cup Defensive Most Outstanding Player has officially turned pro, as goalkeeper Clare Gagne signed a contract with Kansas City Current in the National Women's Soccer League after exhausting her college eligibility.
Gagne guided the Tar Heels to the national championship during her lone season in Chapel Hill in 2024 as a graduate student. She was one of five Tar Heels to start all 27 matches and led the team with 2,389 minutes, playing between the posts for all but 50 minutes the entire year.
The Orono, Minnesota native finished the year with a 0.771 save percentage and 0.83 goals-against average behind 74 saves. Her 13 shutouts led the Atlantic Coast Conference and ranked third in the nation. She had five 5+ save performances, including a career-high 13 stops at Florida State – just one shy of the program record from 1980.
She conceded only one goal during the NCAA Tournament, highlighted by back-to-back shutouts in the College Cup. In addition to her College Cup Defensive MVP honor, Gagne was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team and TopDrawerSoccer Best XI Second Team.
Gagne will continue to pursue her master's degree in public health with a certificate in community preparedness and disaster management from UNC online. She earned her undergraduate degree in health and human biology from Brown in May 2024 and has twice been named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.
The Current finished the 2024 season at No. 4 in the NWSL standings.
"I am beyond excited to be joining the Current for the 2025 season," said Gagne in a KC Current press release. "I am so grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow in this world-class environment, surrounded by so many talented individuals and wonderful fans. I can't wait to contribute to the KC community this season and do all I can for this team on and off the field."
