#23 Volleyball Takes Down Georgia Tech For First Time Since 2017
October 12, 2025 | Volleyball
ATLANTA, Ga. – No. 23 Carolina volleyball moved to 6-0 in ACC play with a massive, four-set win over Georgia Tech. The win marks the first over Georgia Tech since 2017 and the first in Atlanta since 2016.
Â
The three-headed monster of Safi Hampton, Laynie Smith, and Chelsea Thorpe powered the Tar Heels to their seventh consecutive victory. The three combined for 38 kills with a season-high 12 from Smith.
Â
Hampton continued to show why she was added to the 2025 AVCA Player of the Year Watch List with her 10th game this season with 15+ kills.
Â
Georgia Tech took the opening set behind a 13-2 run to close.
Â
Needing to fight back, the Tar Heels needed a spark and got it with a 3-0 run to break an 8-8 tie in the second. After that they went on to win 25-22.
Â
The third set was powered by Hampton who rattled off seven kills. There was a big swing when Head Coach Mike Schall won a challenge that took the score from 10-10 to 11-9. Carolina would go on to win the set 25-19
Â
The fourth set was all Tar Heels, they got their distance with a 6-0 run to make it 7-1 right out of the gate. They rode that run all the way to a 25-17 win.
Â
This marks the first time since 2016 that Carolina opened ACC play 6-0. The Tar Heels are back on the road next week with a match at Boston College on Friday and then the road trip concludes with a match at Syracuse on Sunday.
