Ratiu & Xu Win Regional Doubles Title To Qualify For NCAAs

CARY, N.C.—Junior Niels Ratiu and sophomore Chris Xu topped freshmen teammates Ian Mayew and Kase Schinnerer in an all-Carolina doubles final at the men's ITA Carolina Regional on Monday afternoon at Cary Tennis Park.
With the victory, Ratiu and Xu clinch a bid into the 2025 NCAA Doubles Championship, to be played November 18-23 in Orlando.
Xu and Ratiu started the morning with a straight-set victory over the nation's 74th-ranked team (and the weekend's second seed), Max Stenzer and Sean Daryabeigi, 6-4, 6-4. After trailing, 4-3, in the second set, the Tar Heels rallied to win the final three games and win the match. They broke the Gamecocks' serve to take a 5-4 lead, then Ratiu held serve to take the 6-4, 6-4 victory.
After a 90-minute break between matches to rest, Xu and Ratiu met Mayew and Schinnerer, who had advanced to the final with a semifinal win on Sunday afternoon in Cary. After a back-and-forth first set, a pretty passing shot forehand down the line by Ratiu clinched a 7-2 tiebreaker win.
In the second set, Ratiu and Xu won three consecutive games to take an early, 4-1 lead, then held serve the rest of the way for a 6-3 win. Ratiu dominated in the final game, serving and not allowing a point to clinch the regional championship and a trip to Orlando.
UNC will return to action in two weeks when members of the Tar Heel team will compete in the Wake Forest Invite October 31-November 3.
