Women’s Soccer Falls In PKs, 4-3

FORT WORTH, Texas – University of North Carolina women's soccer (13-6-2, 6-4 ACC) fell 4-3 in penalties against no. 2 TCU (17-2-3, 9-1-1 Big 12) Monday afternoon at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
Carolina and TCU both struggled to get in a rhythm during the first half. There were only two shots taken in first, and both came from the Tar Heels. Both defenses played physical resulting in 13 total first half fouls before heading into halftime knotted at 0-0.
The Tar Heels settled in during the second half where they played aggressive offense and defense taking nine shots while holding the Horned Frogs to just three.
In the 81st minute, Riley Kennedy found Bella Devey who headed straight for the goal. Despite a collision between the TCU goalkeeper, a couple Horned Frog defenders, and Devey, the freshman popped up to take the shot on an open goal. The ball found the back of the net to give the Tar Heels a late 1-0 edge. The goal marked the fifth for Devey this season.
With just six seconds left, TCU scored the equalizer off a corner kick to send the match into overtime.
UNC headed into extra minutes of play for the second game in a row.
The Tar Heels had three chances through the first overtime but were unable to record the golden goal sending the game into a second overtime.
The Tar Heels and Horned Frogs continued to battle defensively leaving the score at 1-1 at the end of the second overtime. With the score still tied, the game would yet again be decided by penalties.
Carolina eventually fell after taking penalties 4-3.
