Fencing Upsets Ohio State

COLUMBUS, OH -Â Carolina fencing upset No. 5/6 Ohio State on Sunday at the Elite Invitational.
The women's team posted a statement victory over the Buckeyes, winning 20-7, as epee and sabre combined for a 15-3 record. Four fencers had perfect 3-0 outings, as every fencer in that weapon group had a winning record against the Buckeyes. The men's team also took down Ohio State 16-11. Foil stood out against the Buckeyes as Peter Bruk went undefeated for the fourth time this weekend. Elden Wood was also perfect against OSU for sabre.
Carolina fell to No. 7 Penn 19-8, but there were three standout performances for the women's team. Fiona Lee and Mariasole Capellua both earned two wins, and Gabriella Alfarache came off the bench and won her bout. The men's team dropped a close match to No. 7 Penn Quakers 16-11. Elden Wood led the way for the sabre squad, earning two wins, including taking down All-America honoree Simon Kushkov 5-2. Peter Bruk and Nick Baumstein both won their last two bouts in a row against Penn. Brayden Gyure has won two bouts six of the last seven times out including against Penn.
Carolina returns to action next week as they will head to Fort Worth, Texas, for the November North American Cup.
