CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—No. 27 Florida State won a tightly contested doubles point and went on to defeat No. 55 North Carolina's men's tennis team, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Chewning Tennis Center.
Florida State won its fourth consecutive match and improved to 14-7 overall, 6-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina's three-match winning streak came to an end, as it fell to 12-7, 6-4 ACC.
The Seminoles took the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Carolina's Vladislav Melnic and Chris Xu started the day with Carolina's highest-ranked doubles win of the season, a 6-3 win over the sixth-ranked team of Alex Bulte and Youcef Rihane. The Noles responded with 6-4 wins at the No. 2 and 3 slots to take a 1-0 lead.
In singles play, FSU's 40th-ranked Jamie Connel blanked Constantinos Djakouris, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, followed by a straight-set win by Joshua Dous-Karpenschif over Diego Jarry at No. 5 and a 6-2, 6-3 win by Youcef Rihane over Nick Mangiapane.
"Credit Florida State, they played very well today," UNC head coach Sam Paul said. "We learned some things today. The doubles point, we were right there. [If we win that] it's a different spot, a different match. We learned a lot from today and can use it to get better."
