April 5, 2025 | Women's Tennis
BERKELEY, CALIF.—The seventh-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team raced to a 3-0 lead and held on for a 4-2 win on Saturday afternoon at No. 16 California, completing a 2-0 road trip on the West Coast this weekend.
Reese Brantmeier won the clinching singles match for UNC.
With the win, the Tar Heels improved to 18-4 overall and 9-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season. Carolina has won 11 of its last 12 matches since the start of outdoor play. UNC also won at No. 25 Stanford, 4-0, on Friday afternoon in its first West Coast ACC road swing.
The Golden Bears fell to 11-6, 8-2 ACC.
To start the afternoon, Brantmeier and Alanis Hamilton, the 18th-ranked doubles duo in the nation, cruised to a 6-2 win at the No. 1 position over Cal's Jessica Alsola and Mao Mushika. Shortly thereafter, #34 Theadora Rabman and Tatum Evans beat Berta Passola-Folch and Naomi Xu, 6-4, and UNC won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead.
Freshman Claire Hill gave Carolina a 2-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles over #56 Katja Wiersholm. Not long thereafter, #41 Carson Tanguilig defeated Greta Greco Lucchina in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 for a 3-0 Tar Heel advantage.
Cal rallied and cut the lead to 3-2 after back-to-back wins by #83 Alsola at No. 2 singles over Rabman and Folch at No. 4 over Hamilton.
Brantmeier beat the 25th-ranked Mushika, 6-4, 7-6 (4) at No. 1 singles to clinch the team win for Carolina.
"We talk a lot about using each match as an opportunity to grow, and I think that showed up today versus a very talented Cal team," said Tar Heel assistant coach Hayley Carter. "It was one of our most complete matches of the dual season so far, and we're really happy with how we competed today all the way down the line in both doubles and singles. We look forward to building upon these matches and coming out strong for our last regular season weekend back at home."
