April 6, 2025 | Men's Golf
David Ford, the No. 1-ranked player in the nation, birdied the first extra hole to win the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational in a playoff Sunday at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
The Haskins is Ford's fourth title of the season, a UNC record, and the sixth of his career, which ties him for the second-most in Carolina history. He joins Dane Huddleston of Utah Valley and Justin LaRue of Longwood as the only players to win four tournaments this season.
The senior from Peachtree Corner, Ga., shot 69-66-69 for a 12-under 204 total. He was tied after 54 holes with Illinois' Max Herendeen, who shot 66-69-69. Ford and Herendeen came into the final round tied for second at 9 under par, a stroke behind Oklahoma State's Preston Stout, who finished third at 11 under.
Ford was ranked No. 1 entering the tournament in the NCAA's Scoreboard/Clippd ranking and No. 1 in the current PGA TOUR University standings. His four medalist performances this season also include titles in the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas; the Williams Cup at Eagle Point Golf Club, in Wilmington, N.C.; and Carolina's previous start in the Valspar Collegiate Invitational in Palm City, Fla.
Four other Tar Heels had won three tournaments in a season – Davis Love III in 1983-84, Greg Parker in 1984-85, John Hughes in 1985-86 and Dustin Bray in 2002-03.
Ford's six career titles are one off the UNC record. Bray won seven times from 2004-04, Love won six from 1981-84 and Pat Moore won six from 1988-92.
Ford's final-round 69 marked the second tournament in a row he shot in the 60s in all three rounds. He has shot in the 60s in 12 of the last 14 rounds and 20 times in 27 rounds this season. His scoring average of 68.59 is on pace to break the UNC single-season record.
Carolina tied for fourth in the 15-team field, shooting 284-284-288 for a total of 8-under 856. Oklahoma State and Texas were co-champions at 20-under 844. The Illini were third at 15 under and the Tar Heels tied Notre Dame for fourth at 8 under.
Carolina freshman Sihan Sandhu, playing as an individual entry, tied for 12th with rounds of 71-70-72 for 3-under 213. Sandhu and freshman Ethan Paschal carded the lowest Sunday rounds by a Tar Heel other than Ford with matching 72s.
Keaton Vo (73-68-73) tied for 15th at 2-under 214, Paschal (69-77-72) tied for 25th at 1-over 217, Maxwell Ford (73-74-74) tied for 47th at 5-over 221 and Hampton Roberts (77-76-75) tied for 65th at 12-over 228.
Carolina plays host to the Tar Heel Intercollegiate Saturday and Sunday at Finley Golf Club. Admission is free and parking is available at the Finley Field lots, which have shuttles that will take fans to the first tee.
On Saturday, the teams will play 36 holes beginning with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. The teams will play a final round on Sunday with tee times beginning at 9 a.m.
