Softball Is Dancing For The First Time Since 2019

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – For the first time since 2019, Carolina softball is dancing. The Tar Heels will be the No. 3 seed in the Knoxville Regional. This marks the 15th appearance in the NCAA Tournament in program history. UNC will be chasing win No. 20 in the tournament, currently sitting at 19 wins.

They will take on Ohio State on Friday at 4 P.M. ET on ESPNU. In 2019, UNC was sent to the Knoxville Regional where it squared off with Ohio State and reached the regional final against Tennessee.

Under second year head coach Megan Smith Lyon, the Tar Heels won 40 games for the first time since 2017, had 23 top-100 RPI wins, and beat three conference champions. Carolina also scored more runs than any other team in program history (378).

Kat Rodriguez heads into the NCAA tournament tied for the ACC single-season RBI record (83) having already shattered the previous single-season program record. Rodriguez and Alex Coleman are also tied for the single-season program record for runs (67).

In program history, UNC has made it to six regional finals, including the last two NCAA Tournament appearances.
