No. 25 Volleyball Sweeps Wake Forest To Open ACC Play

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 25 Carolina volleyball opened conference play with a statement sweep (25-19, 25-22, 25-17) against Wake Forest. This is the third straight victory against the conference foe and the second straight sweep.
The Tar Heels notched the third sweep of the young season as Mike Schall improves to 9-4 against in-state opponents.
Safi Hampton was once again the engine for the offense as she had double-digit kills in nine of ten matches this season, including six in a row. This is the seventh time this season that she has led the team in kills. Hampton hit .440, which was the third time this season that she hit over .400. Tonight's offensive output was the fifth match hitting over .300 on the season as they hit .333 as a team.
Defensively, the Tar Heels shut down the Demon Deacons as they produced twelve blocks to Wake Forest's three. Maddy May continued to shine as she dug 13 balls. She has had double digits in all but one match this season. Lauren Schutter set a new career high in blocks for the second time this season with eight on the night.
The Tar Heels continued their hot start to the season as they outplayed Wake Forest in the first set, which featured three ties, all of which occurred within the first six points. The last time that Wake Forest had the lead was at 3-2 before Chelsea Thorpe tied the match at three, and Carolina never gave the lead back, closing out the first set on an 8-3 run to win 25-19.
Wake Forest challenged the Tar Heels in the second set as they kept the score within two points through 42 points or until the score was tied 21-21, which was the start of a 5-1 run to win the second set. The second set had 18 ties and six lead changes, but Carolina came out on top 25-22.
The final set went the way of the Tar Heels as they took the lead back for good after it was tied at 12-12. Carolina broke it open with a 4-0 run. Carolina's defense prevailed as the Demon Deacons were held to the match low hitting percentage at .061 as Carolina won 25-17.
Carolina returns to action on Sunday, Sept 28. against the NC State Wolfpack at 1:00 p.m. on ACCNX.
