January 31, 2026 | Women's Tennis
CARY, N.C. – No. 3 University of North Carolina women's tennis clashed with no. 9 NC State Friday evening at Cary Tennis Park. The top-10 matchup lived up to the billing as Carolina came back to win, 4-3.
The Tar Heels and Wolfpack started the evening in doubles action. UNC would go on to drop two doubles matches giving NC State the doubles point. This marks the first time this season Carolina headed into singles down 1-0.
Anna Frey got UNC started with a straight-sets win in singles to even the match at one-all. The freshman is now 6-0 in singles play since becoming a Tar Heel this January.
NC State countered with a win in singles over no. 51 Theadora Rabman to regain the advantage at 2-1.
Despite dropping the second set, no. 23 Oby Kajuru picked up a win for UNC after topping no. 31 Mia Slama (6-4, 3-6, 6-4). The Tar Heels and Wolfpack were even yet again at 2-2.
No. 35 Tatum Evans fell in the first set to no. 60 Anna Zyryanova, 3-6. With her back against the wall, Evans came back to win the next two sets, 6-3, to take another singles win for the Tar Heels.
NC State tied the match up once again as no. 38 Lavinia Tanasie downed no. 69 Alanis Hamilton. The match remained knotted at 3-3 with the singles match in the ones position still going.
No. 1 Reese Brantmeier got off to a strong start against no. 29 Gabriella Broadfoot taking the first set 6-4. Broadfoot fought back to even the score after winning the tiebreak, 7-4, in the second set. In typical Brantmeier fashion, the senior grinded out a set three win to secure the victory (6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-4).
Brantmeier's win clinched the match for the Tar Heels, 4-3. The win is Carolina's fifth-straight against NC State.
