CHAPEL HILL, N.C.— Terrence Brown scored 21 points to lead five Tar Heels in double figures as North Carolina ran out to a quick lead and blitzed Wofford, 109-70, on Friday night in the Smith Center.
Brown scored 12 in the first half to set the tone and posted his 37th career 20-point game and his first as a Tar Heel, finishing strong at the rim to hit 6 of 9 two-point shots while hitting 6 of 8 free throws. He committed just one turnover.
Carolina shot 50 percent or better in each half while using solid defense to limit the Terriers to just 33.3 percent overall.
UNC improved to 2-0 in head coach Michael Malone's first season in Chapel Hill and has won 20 home games in a row. Wofford dropped to 0-2.
Freshman Maximo Adams posted his first career double-digit rebounding game, snaring nine in the first half and finishing with a game-high 11 to go with 11 points for his first college double-double. He was also Carolina's defensive player of the game.
"It helps a lot to have a maniac on your team," Jaydon Young said of Adams. "He's really, I genuinely think he's a maniac. But he'll do the same thing in practice. He'll get a rebound and scream in everyone's face for an hour. Coaches, players, it doesn't matter. So I think he brings that energy every single day, and it definitely helps us out. It helps us a tremendous amount because everybody's not willing to do that at all times."
Alex Samodurov tallied 13 points and seven boards, and Young hit four three-pointers and scored 15, his high as a Tar Heel. Jarin Stevenson scored 10, starting with an agressive, two-handed slam to open the game.
Cutter Sisk scored 14 in the first half and a game-high 27 overall with seven rebounds for Wofford.
Carolina built a big lead quickly in the first six minutes and forced the Terriers to miss 11 of their first 13 shot attempts and 18 of their first 22. Meanwhile, the Tar Heels started 11 for 18 from the floor and never looked back, leading by double digits for the final 14:18 going into halftime. UNC shot 50 percent in the first half while limiting Wofford to 29.4 percent, hitting 16 of 20 free throws and dominating in the paint, 26-12. Ten Tar Heels scored before the break.
UNC hit 7 of its first 10 shots after intermission and quickly increased its lead to 26 at 67-41, then had more than doubled up the Terriers, 25-12 four minutes later to essentially put the game out of reach at the under-12:00 timeout. Tar Heel bench players saw most of the late-game action and continued the starters' strong performances as the team put forth a much stronger performance overall than it had in Monday's season-opening win over Western Carolina.
"We had a positive assist-to-turnover ratio," Brown said. "Coach said that we did a way better job with the turnovers and assist rate and fast break points. We did a great job of fast-break points, and limiting their fast-break points."
The Tar Heels dominated nearly every statistical category, including points in the paint (50-32), bench points (58-44), fast break points (20-4) and second-chance points (19-10). Carolina's 109 points were its most since dropping 113 on NC State on February 5, 2019, in a 113-96 win at home.
"We have a starting five that's never played one minute together prior to the season," Malone said. "We have 11 new players, and so I think each day that goes by, each battle, each contest that we go through, kind of brings us together even more. And you have that family, you have that togetherness, and that cohesion that improves. We're just trying to really instill, like being selfless, is a huge part of what we're trying to build here. And it's not about you. When we're up by 20, it's not about you. It's still the team. It's still we, and we can continue to maintain that and drive that home. That's when you have a chance to build something special."
