Carolina Picks Up Fourth Consecutive Run-Rule Win & Sweeps Le Moyne, 21-1
March 1, 2026 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Jadyn Nunez's grand slam put the cherry on top of a dominant day and weekend for Carolina baseball, which completed a sweep of Le Moyne on Sunday afternoon with a 21-1 victory in seven innings.
Â
The No. 8 Tar Heels (11-1-1) pounded the Dolphins to the tune of three doubles, three home runs, and 14 free passes as the team put up its most runs in a game since beating Duke 21-6 in head coach Scott Forbes' first year in charge in 2021. The 20-point margin was the largest for UNC since they beat Virginia Tech 20-0 in May of 2017.
Â
Run rules were widely adopted in college baseball before the 2024 season, so it is a small sample size. Nevertheless, this weekend represents the first time Carolina has won via mercy rule in all three games of a series. The Heels have won four in a row in this fashion, the longest such streak in program history.
Â
Carolina jumped all over Le Moyne early, putting up nine in the opening frame to take immediate control. It was the highest scoring inning of the season so far and the most since hitting the same number in the fourth against Queens in 2025.
Â
Colin Hynek got the party started with a bases-clearing double to left, one of his five extra base hits on the week. It was the first of many bases loaded opportunities for the Heels on the afternoon, finishing 4-5 in those spots with 15 RBIs on a homer, two doubles, a single, a walk, a HBP, and a sac fly.
Â
Next batter after Hynek was Cooper Nicholson, who launched his second home run of the series 367 feet to left to make it 5-0. The bases were then loaded back up for the red-hot Erik Paulsen who brought everyone home with a double of his own to right center.
Â
The Massapequa, N.Y., native wrapped an incredible week hitting .706 with 12 runs and 11 RBIs by adding three more hits on Sunday.
Â
The runs would come in bunches throughout the remainder of the game as Carolina marched towards a seven-inning ending. A sac fly and two wild pitches scored three in the bottom of the third for UNC before Hynek popped back up with a two-run shot to left.
Â
It was a six pack of scores in the sixth inning, highlighted by Nunez's laser beam grand slam just over the fence in left. It was the first career collegiate hit for the Miami, Fla., product and the first grand slam of the season for the Tar Heels. Carolina had not had a pinch-hit grand slam since Jackson Hesterlee did it against Georgia Tech on April 21, 2008.
Â
The offense was the story, but starter Folger Boaz was quietly efficient on the mound in picking up the win. Battling through stretches of 30 minutes at a time without throwing a pitch, the junior went 5.0 IP with six strikeouts on five hits and just one run allowed.
Â
Tom Chemielewski and Kyle Percival entered in relief and both threw faultless innings to put the game away. Chmielewski picked up three punchouts in his brief outing.
Â
The Tar Heels have a day off before getting right back to action with a midweek matchup at home against Elon on Tuesday afternoon. Â First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET in Boshamer Stadium with streaming set to appear on ACCNX.
