Carolina Outfield Leads The Way To 8-2 Victory Over UNCG
March 18, 2026 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - A pair of double plays from their corner outfielders and lockdown team pitching propelled Carolina baseball to an 8-2 win over UNCG on Wednesday night in Boshamer Stadium.
The No. 14 Tar Heels (18-3-1) added their fourth and fifth outfield double plays in their last four games thanks to the athleticism and arms of Perry Hargett and Rom Kellis V. A program that has built a reputation of elite defense in the outfield through the likes of Vance Honeycutt and Kane Kepley has continued that emphasis in 2026, all five of those double plays have come from different players.
Hargett ranged over into foul territory in the top of the third, making a sliding catch and firing to second to beat the tagging UNCG runner. Kellis caught a line drive in left and threw out what would have been a go-ahead run for the Spartans at the plate. Both plays ended the inning.
Carolina deployed six different pitchers on Wednesday, matching a season high and the most used in a win. Tom Chmielewski got the start and went the furthest, throwing 3.1 innings allowing two runs on just one hit with two strikeouts.
The five relievers after him combined to pitch 5.2 scoreless frames and give up four hits and three walks with five punchouts. Junior Boston Flannery got the win, the first of his career.
The offensive output came throughout the lineup, as all but one Tar Heel hitter reached safely at some point in the game. The red-hot Owen Hull was the first to drive in a run, his RBI single part of a two-run first frame that put Carolina up early.
A two-RBI Spartan single in the fourth tied the game, but UNC's leader in batting average Erik Paulsen answered in the sixth with the go ahead run that put his team up for good.
The big exclamation point for Carolina came in the five run seventh inning. Kellis kept his exceptional day going with his first home run of the season, a two-RBI line drive shot to right. A passed ball, a Gavin Gallaher double, and a wild pitch scored the remainder for UNC.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a weekend series against Louisville at home in Boshamer Stadium. The opener will be the team's first official home night game of the season with first pitch set for 8 p.m. ET.
