Baseball Loses To No. 9 Coastal Carolina, 12-2
April 28, 2026 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Carolina baseball dropped its Tuesday night contest in Boshamer Stadium against the visitors No. 9 Coastal Carolina by a score of 12-2.
Â
The No. 2 Tar Heels (36-9-1) played a tight game against last season's national runners up at the halfway point, but let it slip away with eight combined runs allowed in the sixth and seventh. The 15 hits given up was tied for the most in a game this season.
Â
Carolina took the lead in the bottom of the second through a great piece of hitting from Cooper Nicholson. With Erik Paulsen on first base ahead of him, the Tar Heel third baseman launched his 11th home run of the year past the left field foul pole.
Â
That's four long balls in the last nine games for the D-III transfer who is coming on strong as of late. Across the last 10 games for the Heels, Nicholson is slashing .333/.533/.833.
Â
After Nicholson's home run, there wasn't much going for UNC offensively. Only three Carolina players advanced into scoring position, twice for Jake Schaffner and one from Lee Sowers in the ninth.
Â
Eight arms was the most UNC had used in a game this season. The first two put together the strongest performances. Starter Jackson Rose finished his 1.2 innings with three strikeouts and one run allowed before Walker McDuffie entered to help him out of a jam.
Â
McDuffie was spectacular in his outing, as he has been all year. He logged a career-high eight strikeouts across 4.1 IP, giving up two runs in his final frame of work. At one point he retired 10 straight Chanticleers.
Â
The remainder of the Carolina relieves combined to surrender nine runs on nine hits as the game slipped away.
Â
The Tar Heels will have an opportunity for a quick bounce back tomorrow night when they face Queens at home. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. ET and streaming will be available on ACCNX.
